VORN Bioenergy Ferrara (Italy)

Project overview

In Ferrara, in the heart of northern Italy, a new biomethane plant is currently being built. The project is developed and implemented by VORN Bioenergy, together with regional partners on site. Construction started at the end of 2024, with completion planned for mid‑2026.

The plant will eventually produce 1,000 Nm³ of biomethane per hour – about 8.5 million Nm³ per year. This can supply roughly 7,000 households with thermal energy. Primarily plant‑based and animal residues will be used as substrate. The centerpiece is an innovative fermenter divided into four containers, built in an earth‑filled design that blends unobtrusively into the landscape of the Po plain.

Challenge

Already during the construction phase, large quantities of substrate had to be received, recorded and stored. All processes needed to be transparent, digital and future‑proof to ensure a smooth transition to the later plant operation. The time window for deploying the software was only a few days between the commissioning of the scale and the start of the harvest with 15,000 tonnes of substrate.

Our solution

With Biotaktix, a digital platform for goods receipt, inventory management, farm logistics and sample management was introduced:

• Hardware integration of the Biotaktix software with the on‑site scale, including label printer and receipt printer
• Capture and management of material flows and qualities via app on tablet or smartphone
• Transparent inventories provide traceability and greater efficiency in accounting and sustainability reporting
• The multilingual user interface in the app and office enables operation by Italian and German staff
• Integration of the ERP system Business Central via a direct interface for seamless processes

Conclusion

Biotaktix delivers transparency and efficiency in the capture and management of material flows, inventories and qualities in Ferrara – already from the first harvest day.
